Contractors working for Dane Housing unsafe building site putting lives in danger

Dane Housing Conglton Ltd
Shepherds Mill
Worrall St
Conglton
CW12 1D1

The old scout at the rear of Underwood Lane and Oxford St Crewe is surrounded by houses on 3 sides. Most of the people in this area are over 70 years old and some are as old as 90. Many of them have wheelchairs as they cant walk far.

You can see the area as it was here http://www.janwright.co.uk/crewe/b4b.htm

The land has been sold to Dane Housing who are going to build flats for unmarried mothers. The land is surrounded by private property which includes a rear alley way for the house in Oxford St and Underwood Lane. This rear alley is PRIVATE PROPERTY and people in the area paid out over £2000 to have this area tarmaced.

Since the builders moved in the old people of the area have had major problems. The builders have brought heavy wagons down Leighton St which is totally unsuitable and has again been tarmaced at resident expense. They then brought very heavy cement wagons onto the private property at the rear of Underwood Lane and cracked the tarmac that people had paid over £2000 for. It was never designed to take lorries and they brought these lorries on without permission.

They were told in words of 2 syllables that this was private property and they must not use it. Next they decided to bring heavy tractors in via a public right of way at the top of the street. In doing so they then blocked of the right of way with a fence and they also fenced off the rear of Oxford St so people couldn’t get out of their own houses.

The blocked Public right of way

Click on the picture to enlarge. This shows the blocked Public right of way you can see they have blocked access to the substation so in an emergency they couldn't get to it.

The public right of way while not great was perfectly passable even in a wheel chair. By the time the heavy tractors had chewed it up it turned into a ploughed field impassable to almost everyone. People tried to get past by using this public right of way but were evicted by the workmen who behaved like bully boys.

The have again brought more heavy cement trucks onto our property and we woke up to find the old ladies garage next door which she had not long had painted covered in cement and the tarmac with big holes in it. When mentioned to the workmen we suffered verbal abuse and taunting. The whole area is a mud bath as the wagons never clean up after them and leave thick mud everywhere. Peoples houses are filthy as they cant help bringing in mud on their shoes and the carpets are suffering.

The right of way is now blocked again by a fence and heavy concrete blocks, why is this so important? This right of way is the only way many elderly and disabled people can get to the local shop some of them cant walk all the way around. As a result they can not get to the shops for food.

What we want.

£2000 compensation for the tarmac or it resurfaced ASAP.
The public right of way opened immediately and left it a state every night were old people can walk down it. Not a ploughed field.

No more lorries on private property or any thing else, we were threatened that they would erect scaffolding on the private property even though people need access daily as there are small firms who us the area.

No more abuse from the workmen.
The old ladies garage repainting.
Repair to Leighton St.
The lorries to clean the area at least nightly.
Access to Oxford St rear which is private property reinstated and not to be blocked again.

People of the area fought off the plans to build other housing in the area a few years ago. We may all be old but are willing to fight.
If wagon enter our property again we will get the press down and get people in wheelchairs and pensioners to block these wagons so they cant get out. I wonder how they will deal with this in front of the press. Will they threaten and beat up these old people?

If the public path isn’t open we will take legal advice but we believe we can get the press down and force our way onto the right of way, again old would they beat up old age pensioners in front of the press?

We have contacted Allen Miller @ Dane housing who said the a public right of way would be fixed but nothing has happened so far

Update 17 Dec 2003

After a meeting with Dane Housing the right of way has been opened and they say they will repair the Tarmac. To top it all on Saturday the whole area was plunged into darkness for several hours as the builders had exposed a electricity main and left it live. Due to the heavy rain it had then shorted out and put the area into darkness. Some shops had to close at 4 o'clock and lost a lot of money.

Update January 30th

This week has seen more fun and games. First we have had a tractor ripping up the tarmac and throwing mud all over the local streets. They are supposed to clean the wheels before going on the road but they haven't and big clods of mud have gone everywhere.

We then had 30ft of very heavy metal fence fall over onto our property lucky no one was walking past as they would have been killed. Some of the other fencing is leaning over at a dangerous angle just waiting to fall on someone.

Old Lady of 74 hurt on the right of way.

A old lady from Oxford St tried to walk down the public right of way and fell and hurt her leg. This was due to the path being in a dangerous state. They have chewed it up with the tractor and then dumped mounds of concrete on the path. As there is know lighting down there you cant see the mounds until its to late and you fall over.

On this occasion the old lady wasn't to badly hurt but its only a matter of time before someone is killed or maimed. It has been reported to Dane Housing but no action has been taken. In my opinion on this site Health and Safety is a joke and the workmen think its funny that people will be hurt.

A picture of the path click to enlarge. Would you let your 74 year old granny walk down here? You can clearly see the big mound of concrete but some of the mounds aren't so clear. Note the angle of the fence its just waiting to fall on someone as it's not secured.

I would like to ask Dane Housing if why they don't care about people Safety?  If an old lady gets hurt because they have made the path dangerous will they sleep at night? Maybe they are only interested in money and don't care if someone gets killed.

I spoke to the old lady when she returned from hospital and she told me how she had stumbled and hurt her back on the footpath. The problem has been reported on the 24th Jan to Mike Watson from Dane housing and also our local labour councillor. No action has taken place and the danger still remains.

I think that says a lot about the contractors working for Dane Housing most companies take H&S very seriously especially when someone has been hurt, but contractors working for Dane Housing doesn't seem to care.

Sex Toys

Contractors working for Dane housings latest stunt is to display sex toys on their fence. The workmen put the sex toy on their fence and they seem to think its funny despite the fact it is a main route for under 5 going to the local school. Its just another display of their attitude to local residents and says a lot about the firm

March 9th Update

Contractors working for Dane Housing again put lives at risk.

Here is a picture of there fence. First of all it is invading our property as its this side of the wall. Second you can see the bricks holding up a stage with loads of bricks on top of it.

If you click on the picture and enlarge it you can see how its leaning over our private property at a dangerous angle. It only takes a child to knock these bricks and down comes all the bricks and the fence on top of them. Further more they are asking their workmen to work on top of the stage ledged on a few bricks. Not only is the whole fencing unsafe but they have been told time and time again the area which is private property but they choose to ignore it. They have already caused thousands of pounds of damages.

Update 5 April 04

Old lady trapped in her own house

An old lady who desperately need to go out to take her grand children home was unable to get out of her own garage as a crane owned by

Bob Francis  of Bob Francis Crane Hire & Heavy Haulage Wrexham 01978 762696. Rhyl 01745 591974. Anglesey 01407 830054. Services Available: Cranes Truck  blocked the private entrance to her backs.

Despite being told that the crane was blocking private property and had its feet down on private property they refused to move it. It was there for the whole day and none of the companies who use the backs could do any work.

This company have been up to their old trick by breaking the law and not caring about anyone else as they know they can get the job done before anyone can do anything. They don't care what effects it has on local people this poor women had to get to the hospital but couldn't go because she couldn't get out of her own backs.

We are totally amazed at the attitude of this company. We all watched as the crane lifted heavy steel and concrete over a public road and we were frightened by the children under the load. It is not surprising that the workmen working under the crane wore no safety helmets.

Here you can see the crane is totally blocking our right of way and the foot is down on our tarmac you cant even walk past it. Click on the image to enlarge

Here we see the crane lifting bricks and concrete and the idiots working underneath with know Safety Helmets but the Boss is ok he stands and watch's with his helmet on.

6th April

Are Contractors working for Dane housing caring out a terror campaign?

They again came with a crane and blocked the backs yet again. We complained to Dane housing who yet again said they would sort it out. But on Good Friday they came and opened the fence outside my house and dragged it across the back so we couldn't get any cars down the backs again. But the workman did bring his son of about 7 years of age and let him play on the building site all day. He spent much of his time throwing stones.

Is this Contractors working for Dane housings way of terrorising people who complain to get young children to throw brick at you? What is next petrol bombs? Having complained so many times about them blocking our back one cant believe that they didn't know about it so the only conclusion is they came and blocked the backs on purpose.

What sort of firm allows a 7 year old children play on a dangerous building site climbing on scaffolding and jumping off high roofs?  I am sure the health and Safety will be impressed with this one.

26th April Blocked in again

We were once again blocked in so we couldn't get into our own backs for most of the day. We can only conclude that this is a terror campaign by Contractors working for Dane Housing as they have been told time and time again. There is no reason for them to do this as they could use Oxford ST which wouldn't block anyone but the choose to block our access.

Click on the picture to see it enlarged.

As a point of interest we now have a super new camera the Fujifilm S5000 with over 22X Zoom. Just look at the quality of this picture, we can now take pictures of the from a long way away and see it as though we were inch away.

28 April Dangerous Bricks

We believe people are in danger from over half a ton of bricks placed on scaffolding which is right next to a public path. There is nothing to stop these bricks from falling onto a child or into peoples gardens. They have set the standards by putting netting on the other side to prevent the bricks falling. Can you imagine what half a tone of bricks falling from 10-15ft high could do to a child?. We were promise by Dane Housing that any more Safety Violations and they would take the firm off the job this appears to be an empty promise and our safety doesn't seem to be important.

Click to see a full picture.

You can see in the picture the bricks on the scaffolding and the path were children can play directly under the bricks note the uncut grass as their fence is on private property and the mower cant get down to mow it with the fence.

Safest poles in Crewe

On the other side of the coin the site has the safest poles in Crewe as each one seems to have its own hard hat. Funny I thought the idea was the workers wore the hats for safeties sake? There are notices all over the site saying hard hats must be worn, it seems only the poles can read.

You can see the hat on the post and none on the worker

Again it shows how good this camera really this was taken from over 150 yards away using the 22x Zoom.

5th May Update

Contractors working for Dane housings workmen issue death threats

On leaving my house  today I was followed for 10 mins by one of the workmen from the site who appeared to be waiting to catch me alone with no witness. He appeared behind me with what appeared to be an offensive weapon and only backed off when the dog showed an interest in him. He made it very clear that if I didn't stop complaining my life was in danger and that of my children. A brick on my head maybe. It appears it is now unsafe to leave my house or I will be beaten up by the thugs off the building site.

This is Contractors working for Dane housings answer to my complaints as they still haven't put anything to stop the bricks falling onto anyone in a public path even though it has been reported to Neil Baumber, Alan Miller & Mike Watson.

How low can any firm get when they start using violence to stop legitimate safety complaints.

7th May

The harassment continues as we cant open our back door anymore if we do we are hit by abuse everyone banging on the scaffolding or other amusing comments

13 May H&S Exec visit the site

We have had a full report from the Health & Safety Executive. You can see it here.

They visited the site on 26 April and told them to put up guards to stop the bricks falling. As the above photos show they didn't do anything about it. They caught them again a week later and still no guards and again told them to get it done Its now been over 3 weeks and they have not done it. This means that I have told them and the H&S and still they put peoples lives at risk knowing full well of the danger. This is only what they have been caught doing.

This is a life and death safety problem a ton of bricks on planks 15 ft high can be a killer but this company don't care if lives are at risk. It is not my opinion but the expert opinion of the H&S Exec. To ignore safety when advised by the H&S is madness and no firm in their right mind would ignore a directive from the H&S. The site is still in an unsafe state and hard hats still are not being worn even though there are signs up saying they must be worn.

17 May The Sentinel newspaper run the story

The story was in the paper today and we send a email to Anne Ward of Dane Housing about the problems but as yet she has not replied. They seem to think that ignoring people will make the problem go away. The council confirm that they have no right to use Leighton St as their main access point. They have slowly been destroying the unmade street with their heavy wagons. Local resident decided that blocking this road is their only way to stop them. There is no reason why they cant change their access to the council maintained road of Oxford St which will be their right of way.

1St June We send a petition

We had a reply from our MP who passed on a letter she received from Dane Housing. They made some interesting points.

They say their site is safe and run to the highest safety standards.

You can see from the pictures and the H&S report this is a lie. Pictures taken today show workmen still not wearing hard hats (they do wear fancy bob hats does that count?) even though the site clearly states they must.

They say that only myself complains. The petition shows everyone is up in arms and that I am acting as the Chairman of the residents and therefore speaking for the whole area.

The petition has been sent to Anne Ward and others at Dane housing and as you can see the demands are that they repair the damaged alley, remove their fence from private property and stop using Leighton St for heavy lorries. They are now parking works vans on property owned by 2 Leighton St. All they need to do is to park in the car park in Oxford St were there is room for 10 or more cars.

As per usual we have had no reply from anyone at Dane housing AGAIN. They did tell the MP that they gave us regular updates, more lies. They stated that most of the info on the site was untrue but as the pictures clearly show they are not.

7th June

Our back alley was bombarded with brick and slates as they did the roof (because they didn't adequately guard the scaffolding) and if any children had been underneath they may have been killed. On Sunday they came to remove the scaffolding and we watched as they dropped bolts and scaffolding poles onto our alley were children were playing. They caused damage to the tarmac as they dropped the poles.

You can clearly see the round hole of the scaffolding pole.

Dane Housing have had the petition for over a week and have decided to ignore local peoples views on this matter. This means the home will open with the local people already aggrieved at them. It means we will be reluctant to prevent and criminal activities that occur in the area.

10th June

We get  letter from Neil Baumber @ Dane housing  He makes several points quoting from his letter he claims I have been invited to partake in a number of other site meetings but I was unable to attend. This is untrue

He points out that site safety is the responsibility of the principal contractor and planning supervisor and this is legal true. I am sure those tried for war crimes can claim something similar but Dane Housing do have at the very least a moral duty to ensure that everything is safe as it is conducted in their name. Its their name on the big bill board with no mention of any contractor. If they are so keen on H&S why did they take no action on the brick guards? I informed them the H&S informed them but no action was taken.

Its not really cricket to blame it all on the contractors, they should have taken action when lives were at risk, especially when this was confirmed by the H&S.

15 July

Still no reply from the petition that was sent to Dane housing. It just goes to show how little regard they have for the misery they are causing and how they don't care what local people think. This site will be here for a long time and none cooperation of local people can cause them lots of problems. Still the workman come and park on PRIVATE PROPERTY. They have again extended the fence onto private property in Oxford St and made the fence unsafe in the alley

12 Aug

They manage to come up with more dangers. The fence is in a dangerous state and liable to fall on a child at anytime. They have dug a trench across Leighton St and left a pit open with exposed gas pipes again blocking our access. Having then finished they left the pit open for days so people could fall in. Their grand design has put a copper pipe carrying gas up the side of the flats just were kids can get at it to smash it putting us all in danger of gas explosion. They have not had it all there own way as the kids are off school they have had fun smashing windows and causing other damage. The best bet is what appears to be an inside job they had all their newly delivered paint stolen. As only the workmen new it was there it is a fair chance they were involved.

3Sept

More fun and games. They have installed powerful outdoor light all around the building and at night it is like an airport. No one who sleeps in the back of their houses can sleep as the lights are so bright. To make matters worse the lights shine outwards so they light the whole area not the site. They have been making changes to the path they dug up before and after they have had a big bulldozer on the path its now worse than ever to walk on.

19 Oct

Health and Safety is still treated as a joke on this site with rubbish dumped on private property in a dangerous way. In the picture you can see private property has these post with rusty metal across the path and left there overnight. As its very dark anyone walking down the path could get a metal stake in their leg. All for 2 mins to leave the site safe.

Fire Bombs drive firm away

The original fire next door to Dane Housings building.

The Old Ice Cream Factory which a few months ago was taken over by an engine company has vacated the factory after being fire bombed. The factory was originally set on fire by children 2 weeks after they burnt down the Chapel which was next door. The company took it over not long ago but after the factory was broken into several times and cars were firebombed a few weeks ago they decided they could not live with the constant attacks.

The whole area has suffer these attacks for a long time, last week a van was set on fire next to Dane Housing building. Its only a matter of time before the new building it set on fire and it is putting local people in danger being so close to our houses.
